2011 Fundraising Priorities

Training and Teambuilding
"You understand our problems." -Bishop Katembo Kainda

Friendly Planet works with local church and community leaders to create projects that build a new future for villages recovering from war, disease and poverty. Our training programs include taking leaders on tours through their own districts and on visits to neighboring districts, practicing the model we teach.

Leadership Development Tour:  $100 per kilometer  (2,000 kilometers per year)

Women Leaders
"Women were the primary victims of the war" -Nurse Mary Kabamba

From rape recovery to safe drinking water, girls in school to female-led businesses, women's issues are at the top of the needs list in every village. We train and equip women as church and community leaders.

Women's Boat Lift to Kabalo under leadership of Rev. Jackie Mwayuma: $50,000

Transportation
"This is the best thing we have ever done."-Bishop Ntambo Nkulu in response to 1995 bike distribution
"I am so thankful about the project; it is the most saving project the world has ever offered to my people."           -Rev. John Mutombo in response to the 2011 launch of the FPM river boat "The Indiana"

DR Congo's lack of drivable roads and reliable passenger trains make travel within the country difficult. Access to affordable modes of transportation transforms lives and communities. Since 1995, we have been helping the local church purchase bicycles for pastors and lay leaders in the region. 2011 marked the building of our first river boat, "The Indiana." The countless testimonies we receive about the fruit of this initiative makes transportation assistance continue to be one of our top priorities.

Standard Bicycle $200
Mountain Bicycle $350
River Boat      $12,000

(Re)Construction
"Everywhere we visit, we find people worshipping in sanctuaries without roofs" -DS Rev. Joseph Mulongo

The recent war in DR Congo has left the population with the overwhelming task of rebuilding their lives; countless homes and public buildings were ransacked and burned down. All over the region we have found hardworking communities baking bricks and volunteering their labor to rebuild their sanctuaries, schools, clinics, etc. Their efforts often get stuck, however, when they confront the expense of purchasing and transporting bags
of cement and roofing sheets. This is where we step in with your financial assistance. Along the river, our boat
"The Indiana" has already started reducing the difficulty of getting these supplies to remote locations.

                                                Roofing Sheet $20 each
                                                Cement           $40 per bag

Q: How many sheets and cement bags do you need?
A: We have over $500,000 worth of construction projects in process.

Community Health
"The source of all our health problems is in the bad water" -Dr. Serge Yumba

Friendly Planet partners with local doctors and nurses to develop a community health delivery system. From training nurses to providing safe sources of water, we are defeating malaria, cholera and typhoid at the village level.

Nursing School Scholarship: $500
Repairing Old Water Drilling Rig: $5,000
                                                       Support of Village Clinics: $10,000

                                                            Q: Can I sponsor a well?
A: The community in Mulongo owns a well digging machine. Step one is to get it working.

Kamina Methodist University

Started as an extension of The United Methodist Seminary at Mulungwishi and led by Africa University graduates, KMU is the first locally created institute of higher education in this generation to address the leadership needs of North Katanga.

KMU's head, Rev. 'Guy' Mande Muyombo, serves on Friendly Planet's Advisory board and a growing number of Friendly Planet team members teach at the school. Check out KMU's Facebook page  and blogsite (both created with help from FPM) for more information.
